Yearbook Memory

We were struggling on what had been our favorite memory at RCHS, so we unanimously decided to create one.  We all had many ideas but none of us had the courage to come out in the video and so we kept on debating what we were going to do. The day we got hold of the camera we had absolutely no idea of what we were doing so again we were just talking and not progressing, luckily Angelica began to just film us and that became our video :) , The DEBATE

THE END - Capstone

It was April 19th around 2 o'clock and my friends and I were fixing our hair and changing clothes, which was a fun experience. Afterwards we began to practice our speech but since we had wasted a great amount of time with our hair there was only a bit of time to practice. However, I was glad that I presented my project in front of my classes. After practicing for a few minutes we had to go set up our booth. Then the waiting began, I honestly thought that I was going to be one of the first students to be judge but I was completely wrong. I was waiting for such a long time the people around me were packing up their thing and leaving and I began to panic. Finally my judge came and everything went great, I felt as if was presenting to my friend. In conclusion I am glad to say that I am done with CAPSTONE!!!!!!!!! Right now I might think that this project was useless but maybe in the future it will come in handy.

Video Project

Doing the video project made me realize how important my project  really is. To do the video I used a tool named Prezi which I did not know existed. Prezi is such a great tool to use for presentations or just simple videos. The moral to this, was that creating a project always cause people to find new tools and ideas.

Below is a link to my video:

Brief Proposal Presentation to Class

1. Theme
Obesity has been increasing in a great amount of numbers in the past decades. There is a need for this young generation to improve their health in order to lead this country in the future. A way to fix this problem would be by increasing physical education in schools. To full fill this idea, the curriculum that is being used at the moment will be edited to increase more time for physical activities. The overall point of this project would be to encourage parents and teachers to act for more time of  physical education classes in schools.

2. Props and other assets, food, photographs, building material.
Props and other assets are essential to provide visual aid for the judges. However, for my project I will not be using many props. Nevertheless, I am going to be showing the audience a PSA, a poster and some statistical graphs that show the increase of childhood obesity over the years.

3. Production Timeline

I am done with my poster,  but I still need to work on my website and PSA. For my PSA I just need to fix the voice over and add some background  music to attract the audience's attention. I am still in the process of finishing my website, I need to upload some pictures, videos and the edited curriculum that I am working on. I hope that by the end of next week with the help of God I will be done.

Website Experience 2

At the beginning I thought it was going to be easy to make a website, but I was wrong.  Everything at the beginning seemed fine,  I had decided I was going to use Photoshop in order to be more creative. However, when I began to link the pages I was just really confused. In addition to that  my website did not match with my poster therefore I decided I was going to start all over. Now I am using Wix.com and it is a lot easier. I like working on Wix.com but I have not managed to finish my website. Below there is a link of what I have done so far.

Website Experience

Sadly I have not been able to finish my website. Even though it is a long process I have been learning a great amount of information that I did not know existed. It may become frustrating when my page does not look the way I imagined it but I know that I will be able to finish.

Website Prototype

I would like to make my website really creative in order to attain the attention of people.  Therefore I would have the following:
  •    an introductory page with some stunning facts about obesity and then  they will be able to go to the home page within this page I will have my research paper
  • another page will be the comparison of the new and old physical education curriculum, within this website there will be some activities, so that the public can the improvements of the curriculum.
  •  a page dedicated to physical activity ideas for teachers and staff
  •  a page filled with links to websites of obesity facts
  • a page about the increase of obesity rates
  • a page of how physical education helps improve learning skills

Thinking Ahead - Presentation

Visual aids are great tools to obtain people's attention. People also like short summaries of what the whole project or presentation is about. For instance the judges or the audience will come to a point of frustration if the presenter does not get to the point, and simply just goes on  and on without going straight to the main idea.  Therefore, I would like to use animated graphs that provide information and I will add some facts that parallel with the graph. Using the graph and providing facts at the same time, helps the judge both to visualize and analyze the bottom line of the project.

Below are some tips and ideas that I found online on how to give a presentation:

1. Give the a Souvenir: Provide your audience with something that will help them remember the key terms of the presentation for future reference.

http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/juice-analytics/8-ideas-for-presentations-with-more-zing-10422

2. Use a Metaphor;  This helps the audience understand the main idea of the project or presentation.

http://www.presentation-process.com/creative-presentation-ideas.html#.TzAhztVVVIE

3.  Change of  Pace (Transition) :  After a few slides or after a few minutes of talking break the ice by showing the judges a video, music, or pictures in order to wake up the audience.

http://lindenwooduniversity.web.officelive.com/creativepresentationideas.aspx

4. " And one more thing" : Leave a surprise at the end of your presentation so that the judges can walk way thinking of the presentation.

http://lindenwooduniversity.web.officelive.com/creativepresentationideas.aspx

5. Use a human voice : Do not make long wordy sentences just simply go to the point.

http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/juice-analytics/8-ideas-for-presentations-with-more-zing-10422

This suggestions have been of great aid to my understanding of how to present a presentation, causing the judges to be interested in my project.

Below is a  link to a video from the TED website. This video does not really relate to my project but it has the same end product as mine.

http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/jamie_oliver.html

This video has also helped me see how to use visual aids without ruining my presentation and keeping the audience interested.

Poster

It took me a great amount of time to think of an idea of how to get my point across through a poster. However I was able to recruit my ideas and I began working on my poster.  As I was working on my poster I had some trouble putting my ideas on Photoshop but with the help of my friend I was able to work it out.  Because of this experience I learned that ideas do not just come up in seconds they take time.

Refelection over PIPA and SOPA

If the SOPA and PIPA bills are passed it would honestly be too controlling over the people. For example people will not able to express their feelings without being monitored by the government. Also websites such as Google and YouTube would be in great danger. Such websites are of immense aid to students, in order for them to obtain valuable information for their studies. Overall I am against the SOPA and PIPA bill because it affects many of us and only a few are benefited by it, which is unfair.

Researching Poster Design and Typography

What are the four most important things to keep in mind when designing a poster?

1. The colors and designs of the poster must be creative and aesthetic in order to attract the attention of the targeted audience.
  • Ex: White background it causes the poster to look clean and focuses the viewer toward the data being presented.
  • Text should be large enough to be seen from 5 feet away.
2. Placing information the right way / Organize information.
·         Focus on the important information
·         However, information overload might confuse the reader.
3. A poster must contain an emotional element
·         Ex: to motivate a call to action
4.  Rule of Thirds

Down Below I posted a link of a poster:

http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83564/1281107/advocacyposter.jpg

I believe this poster is a great advocator. The design was something unusual, which caught my attention and it contained an emotional element , that it even caused me to research more about the movement.

PSA Presentation

During the process of brainstorming ideas I had  many but when it came to filming they did not seem to transmit the message. After finding out what I was going to do, I began to film the footage which was a bit of a challenge. However, it was easy to obtain the people that were going to participate in it. The most challenging part of creating the PSA was making last 30 seconds. Overall, I feel that I was able to experience the pressure of a director, editor and producer.

Reflection on Kansas Association of Broadcasters, KAB.

After reading this article my eyes opened to a whole new perspective. For instance I thought that a PSA would be just to inform the audience but it should actually cause the people to  take an specific action according to the issue.  Also a PSA must relate to most of the audience, not just a 4% percent of the population because then the other 96% would be uninterested. Another great bit of information that I was able to acquire through the article , was that the PSA should talk only about the results, as well as use real language so that the audience can relate. An additional tip to make an effective PSA was to not overuse music and sound effects because it can ruin the message of it.

PSA Intent

1.  What type of PSA you will use?
            a.  The audience that I am trying to capture is the school board and parents, because they are the ones capable of approving or advocating for extended physical education classes in schools.  Therefore using statistics to provide evidence of the issue will demonstrate a serious sense to the issue of childhood obesity.
            b.  The call to action will be what my PSA will focus on. In order to motivate the school board members and parents to recognize that there is a desperate need to change the physical lives of elementary, middle and high school students.
            c.  To show statistics at the beginning with music and voice-overs will be very powerful in attracting the attention of the audience. Both text animation and voice-overs are good to use. For the reason that  the text animation causes the audience to interact with the PSA since they have to read the information. The voice-over is a bit more personal, like a one on one conversation. Therefore, in my PSA I am planning to use both of those tools to make a stronger communication with the listeners.

Define the Scope or Approach to your Presentation

I.  For my capstone project I do not need to include explanatory props. However I can take simple tools that are used to do exercise such as rope, which could be used for jump ropes. By using this I will demonstrate my audience that  to do exercise there is no need for great amount of money.

II. My poster material will be in stand so it will be clearly seen by the audience.

III. There is no need for fabricating a model or a 3d prototype since my capstone project is mainly focused on extending physical education classes, which is more of a verbal presentation.

IV. In my presentation I will be proposing something to the school board and therefore I will hope that they take me seriously. Therefore,  the appropriate dress for me would be a business outfit.

V. The main point to present in my verbal presentation would be how the process of extending physical education will take place. For instance I will talk about how and with what resources will I be able to use to attain my goal.

VI.  A brochure is always  helpful tool because it provides the people with a summery of the whole project in only a few paragraphs. Hence it will not bore the audience with information that does not relate to them.

VII.  The presentation of the website and PSA is essential to my presentation because it will fill in the gaps of the information I will not be able to cover.

Discuss Look and feel Issues

A. I would rather make my presentation serious because then it can cause the audience to understand that the subject of obesity is a serious manner, that should be handled as quickly as possible.

B.  Colors such as gray,  black and white are useful because they provide a feeling of importance and seriousness. Same for the fonts I would like to use fonts that are not girly of childish since they can promote a non serious image to what I am trying to portray. The type of design layouts and graphs will be shown with statistics to again promote a sense of importance and catch the audience's hearts.

C. My site, video, and print material will be persuasive because it can reach many different types of audience. For instance there are many people that rather view a website than just simply seeing a short PSA to obtain information of a specific issue. Hence, by having three types of communication the message will be able to be spread at a faster rate and therefore making a change in the community.

D. To provide a clear message I would simply focus on one point, which is how physical education is beneficial to students. To do this I would show evidence such as statistics and any other type of information that will back up my point of view.

E.  I am intending to extend physical education classes in elementary, middle and high schools by using  serious colors and shades of grays.

Thinking ahead on PSA

1.         They key points I would like to emphasis would be the increase of obesity and how physical education can help.

2.         Since the PSA is only 20-30 seconds long there is not enough amount of time to use long voice-overs. However, I would like to use voice-overs informing the audience about short facts. Music would be another factor that will be very useful to attract people's attention.  Visual effects are always useful to help people understand the problem, for my project I would like to use charts and graphs.

3.
    • This PSA, it is short and it provides a message, however it does not focus on how obesity is affecting children, which is something that I am really trying to emphasis on.
This PSA has great information but it is too long and since it does not have any visual effects it does not    attract an audience. In a way I would like to make a PSA like the one above.that provides a great amount of information but I would also like to attract my audience with music and visual effects, rather than just plain information.

  • This PSA provides the message of obesity but it focuses on nutrition rather than physical activity as the solution.

    Statement of Intent

    1.         To reduce childhood and teenage obesity in Dallas, TX by increasing physical education in elementary, middle, and high schools.

    2.         The subject of obesity in the United States has been a major threat to the health of many because it causes many health problems which lead to death.

    3.         With the help of God I am planning to become an elementary teacher. Because of the increase in obesity rates in Texas, I would like to help my future students not only with education but also with their physical lives. Research shows that physical education enhances the learning skills of students.  Therefore,  physical activity and learning go hand in hand.

    4.         As stated above,  physical activities help the learning of students as well as their health.  Therefore, this project will benefit the lives of many young children and adolescents by  reducing obesity rates and increasing learning skills.

    5.         This projects affects three things which are, people , economics and the environment. People are the ones that will be more benefited out of this because as mention before it increases health and learning skills. Second, economics is a major factor in this projects because there is a need of economical resources in order to pay physical education educators as well as teachers. Lastly, the environment is least affected because obesity and learning skills do not have a clear connection.
